Well, here I am, 3:40 AM writing a blog with no idea if anyone will see it or care. But, I suppose it's a good way for me to keep track of things, and if others see it and are interested in sharing along the way, well I've never been known to be a shy person, so that works for me.
A little bit of info about me. My name is Ali, I am 43 years old, have 4 kids and have been married to my best friend for almost 21 years now. After baby #4 (he is now 6 years old) I found it harder and harder to remember things because I was too busy chasing after 4 kids (things like taking those pesky birth control pills). Well, we felt plenty blessed with our 4 kids and so we knew we needed something more to ensure we didn't need to run out and repurchase all of those baby items we had just sold at our last yard sale. So, when I went in for my annual exam my provider suggested I try the Mirena IUD. She said it released a low dose hormone, was good for 5 years and had virtually no side effects, and the best part...many women stopped getting periods, and that was just fine by me!
So, about 4 years ago I went ahead and had a Mirena inserted. Within a couple of months I started developing cystic acne and the dermatologist I saw linked it back to the Mirena. My provider who inserted it insisted it was not the Mirena and even called me back a week after I approached her about it and said she had been in touch with the manufacturer about it and they too reassured her it had nothing to do with the Mirena. Over the next 4 years I developed other problems such as increase in the cystic acne, insulin resistance, I had to have my gallbladder removed after a severe attack (I mentioned to my provider at my annual exam after the first year of the Mirena that I thought I was having gallbladder attacks and she said I didn't fit the profile and dismissed it as gas pain), increase in facial hair, sudden weight gain and a few other quirky things here and there. Prior to that I was in great shape and had even run some marathons. At any rate after being told with every new health issue that I "did not fit the profile" for someone to have developed it, I started researching the Mirena more and more and what I found was tons of complaints from women like me about similar problems that they developed since having the Mirena IUD inserted, many linking it to the synthetic hormone used (Levonorgestrel). So I went in about 12 days ago and had it removed. I am going to track any changes I may notice since having it removed on this blog. Please feel free to share any experiences you may have had with the Mirena as well.
So far, 12 days later the cystic acne is completely gone on my back and has cleared up 90% on my face! Unbelievable! For the past 4 years I have been on steady doses of antibiotics for months at a time, retina-A, spent hundreds of dollars on products such as Proactive and Murad, not to mention all the money spent on super good concealer and other make up. The whole time I was told it could never be the Mirena. I find it highly unlikely that it was a coincidence that it developed shortly after the Mirena was inserted, stayed steady for 4 years and then cleared up within days of having it removed. I will see if I can post some pictures for you all to see. If the pics show up they are from about 3 months ago, 2 months ago, one month ago (and that is how my face has pretty consistently looked for the past 4 years), followed by the last two which are one week after the Mirena was removed and 11 days after it was removed. HUGE difference!
I am not wearing make up in any of them, and I took them all with my phone so the quality would be the same. Some of the acne would stay in the same spot for months on end!!! I wish I had taken pictures of my back because the results there are just as dramatic.
So far I would dare say that this proves the cystic acne was INDEED a result of the Mirena!
My gallbladder is gone, so I can only go by what I am reading out there and assume that too was a result of this nasty device. I'm curious to see if it affects my insulin resistance, weight gain, and other issues.
oh wow Ali..I am so sorry you had to deal with the cystic acne. It looks terribly painful. Glad it's beginning to go away. You can definitely tell a big difference in your skin.
ReplyDeleteInteresting - I had my gall bladder removed, sudden weight gain, increased facial hair and acne problems - very interesting. I am supposed to get mine removed in a few months and I was planning to get another one, now I need to re-think it. I haven't been tested for the insulin resistance..
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes Ali, what an ordeal! Well done you for listening to your body and your intuition and not taking the manufacturer's Big Pharma line of BS, designed to protect their profit margin. Sooo glad you are feeling better. Purrs, Karen
ReplyDeleteDeb, it actually was very painful! Every time I went to a dermatologist and they asked me to take off my make up I always got the same comment, "Wow...you're really good at putting on your make up!". Even the gal at Sephora was surprised when I took it off and she saw my skin.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous....I figured all of my issues were because I am getting older, blah...blah...blah. I'll start posting the links I've found with regards to the hormone they use and what it can do.
Karen, I just wish I had this "Aha!" moment a few years earlier...maybe before my gallbladder was removed. Oh well, can't turn back time, right?
oh wow. so sorry you had to endure all that. its amazing what they'll tell you so you'll use their product or continue to use it. i swear dr's are getting a cut from the pharmacudical companies. this is one of the many reasons i choose to not use any birth control. honestly i don't trust dr.s they know just as much as the rest of us and aren't always right. i tend to go with my gut and natural or over the counter fixes.
ReplyDeleteglad things are clearing up for you. :-)
Did you ever use any other medical drugs? Phentermine gave me terrible cyst zits on my jaw and chin line.
ReplyDeleteI take Metformin, but that does not cause cystic acne, and I am still taking it, so if it was the Metformin the acne would still be there. The only change has been removing the Mirena, and as the pictures show, the acne definitely improved. :)
ReplyDeleteOk so i just got my out today after having it 1 year! With it first being in I very had any problems but the last 2 months i have had: cramping, migraines, throwing up!! When they went to take it out they did an ultrasound and found that i have 2 larger cyst on my ovars
ReplyDeleteThe month before I had it removed I started having horrible cramping, something I had not experienced before with the Mirena. I have not had one single cramp since it has been removed...completely gone.
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! I am so glad I found this blog! I had my mirena put in almost 2 1/2 yr ago and im going to the dr to get it out!!! Did you have any gastro issues? Like what dr would think it IBS? Because along with my mood swings emotional mess and panic and anxiety I have had issue with my tummy I would eat and just blow up with gas but nothing would help and its on and off never constant. Im praying taking this out will help! I'm tired and want to sleep but cant and wake up exhausted! Again thank you so much for blogging!!
ReplyDeletejgmom, I had to have my gallbladder removed last year and from what I am reading the synthetic hormone can cause gallbladder issues. I'm so glad I had it removed, it has really made a difference. Good luck to you, let me know how things go!
ReplyDeleteYeah about 6 months after having it in maybe a little less I had my very first gallbladder attach went to my doctor and had it removed. I have always been a big girl but i have just gained so much weight since having it and no energy and facial hair OMG 20 times worse than when i was pregnant and now at night I feel like im getting hot flashes where my neck and face are burning and its just an emotional roller coaster and my husband isn't a very good cryer handler ;) so its just been a stressful ordeal and I am hoping to get it out this next friday! Thanks again for this blog!
ReplyDeleteI had my Mirena removed on August 8th because of my issues with acne and anxiety. My provider said there was no relation. I was so excited because for two weeks I was acne free. Then on August 22nd I started my period and the acne is back with a vengeance. I still believe this is all related to the Mirena since I never had acne before. I appreciate you sharing your experiences because I thought I was alone in these problems. I am just wondering if this acne will ever go away or do I need to go to a dermatoligist?
ReplyDeletequestion for the lady who posted above: How has your anxiety been so far? since being off the mirena? How was it after you got it taken out? Also the acne could kick back in just cause your hormones are adjusting that is what I have heard...
ReplyDeleteJust got my Mirena out yesterday!!! OMG painfull!! I think it was embedded a little and she couldn't find the strings but was so much more painfull taking out than putting in...was doing good till about an hour afterward got dizzy hard to breathe light headed ugh I hope this all goes away
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I too have had it since the mirena. It has to be this. And if not, than zoloft is the culprit.
ReplyDeleteOmg I thank God I came across your blog I've had three Mirena's since 2008 after I gave birth to my one and only baby girl! I hadn't had any issues with the side effects of the mirena until 2014 unknowingly I had to have my gallbladder removed all of a sudden due to a still unknown cause. I originally thought the gallbladder attack was caused by the Garcinia Cambodia diet pills I was taking, but now I'm really starting to think my mirena was the culprit all along. Nevertheless over the past nine year I'd had occasional acne but nothing as bad as I have now, I mean I have red blimishes all over my face and my back and nothing is helping me to get rid of them as the original poster stated I too have spent so much money trying to clear my face and back. I have an appointment with a dermatologist this week as well as my PCP depending on their recommendations I'll decide if I should take it out. I'll let you all know about my results.
